Responce To Talk From Emily Wyatt's From Polydor Records

On Monday 16th of September Emily Wyatt from Polydor Records came in to talk to us about the production and working processes of a production company. Polydor records in owned by 'The Universal Music Group'. She spoke to us about her job and what happens when creating a music video.
Emily herself was the video commissioner and video editor at Polydor Records. She is effectively the point person between the manager, art director, label and director.

She spoke to us about the development of a music video and how it works. The process starts by;
1. Getting a budget from the managing director.
2. After this you have to get a brief together and get this out to the director.
3. Depending on the director or the number or directors depends on your budget. The more directors you have the bigger the budget. Also some directors are expensive. Budgets can range from £1000 - £300,000. The most expensive directors can be up to £60,000 or even more.
5. The directors are entitles to take 10% of the budget.
6. After this they decide who they want and what they want to do and show this to the artist.
7. They then go out the shoot the video and go onto the editing processes. Most videos are shot over 2 days; one a performance day and the other being a narrative.
8. After they have edited the video they deliver the video and put it up online.

All in all this process takes about a month and a half...

Examples of Polydor Records Works:

Ellie Goldin - Burn
Budget - £60,000
This took one day to shoot from 12pm - 3am

James Blake - Overgrown
Budget - £30,000
This was shot in the day time. Parts were done in the studio. The time laps in the sky was done on a green screen.

Whiles lies - First Time Caller
Budget - £15,000
Shot in Paris over a two day Period.

Sex - 1975
Budget - £55,000
The video took 3 days to shoot. They also did a second version in LA that was more explicit. The original video was shot by a 16mm film giving the vintage quality of the picture.

Final Music Video Idea:

Track - Do I wanna Know
Artist - Arctic Monkeys

Star Image:

Arctic Monkeys are an English indie rock band formed in 2002 in High Green, a suburb of Sheffield. The band consists of Alex Turner, Jamie Cook, Nick O'Malley, and Matt Helders.

This is a screen grab from the 'Arctic Monkeys' opening page. You can instantly see that this is slightly different to the other artist that I have chosen. While they are still in the 'Indie' genre they are more of a rock band then 'folk' music  This is put forward by the harsh contrast of black and white. You can also see that they are a bit more advanced then the other artists as they have more options to choose to visit on there website; including a store.

There image I personally think is a mix between a 'reachable' star and an 'unreachable' star. While they are organic artists as they are slightly bigger and more well know then the other artists I think compared to them there is something bigger about them.

The Song:

Concept of Idea:
I was thinking because this song is sung by a band and the song itself is quite fully band performed song that I would use this to my advantage and create a band. The song itself is quite dark and dingy in one way so I thought about putting the band into a dark and cold looking room or even possibly placing them in a forest. I would place them in dark clothing and possibly some jewellery on. I also thought about using some cuts to ensure that the audience do not get board. Possibly cutting to some slower 'trippy' scenes. Possibly some placed in a forest of a girl kind of dancing round, in a flowy/tatty dress. She is dancing round but the motion is slowed down and a slow focus used on the camera. Cuts are used between the band and the girl dancing around the woods.

Second Idea for Music Vidio:

Track - Highter Love
Artist - James Vincent Mc Marrow

Star Image:
James Vincent McMorrow is an Irish singer and songwriter.
His music again like daughter is Indie Folk Music. Using interments and his voice. The music is quite chilled out and relaxed. Slow paces but usually with some sort of story or emotional tie to the music.

This is a screen grab from his website. I think that the website conforms his star image and his music, re-reinforcing the Indie Folk Music in which is makes. The website uses naturalistic colors and is not bombarding. It also offers you the choice to be able to listen to full tracks of  his music from the web sit and the chance to buy it directly from there; This being individual tracks or the whole album.
If you look at his album cover you can see that he is an organic artist. The image on the front of the album does not show him but a filed with someone in it (we presume him). This album art also re-enforcers that his music is with the Indie Folk Genre.

<-- His image is very 'ordinary' and reachable. This links to Richard Dyers theory of a star image and linking with organic and synthetic artists.

 The Song: (higher love)

Concept/Brief Of Idea:

Another Idea I have for my music video is to have a man singing to this song, sitting in a black box room with just the spotlight on him and his piano. I would want it to be really intense, and romantic, because then this will attract a lot of female audience. I would also add in him, either in the past or the future, this could be up to the viewer. It would be him with a girl, possibly walking through a field or in a dinner laughing in slow motion, to make the audience sympathize with him, and fall in love with the couple. It also creates a nice contrast between the sad song and the happy couple/concept. I would also add an effect onto the past/future scenes to create a memory effect. Between this we could keep cutting back to him so that the audience does not get bored. The story would slowly build up until the last line where it fades back into the field where they started and then it submerges back to him and the piano, where the girl is sitting next to him, facing the camera whilst his back is to the camera, and then a slow fade out.

Idea One for Music Video:

Track - Medicine
Artist - Daughter

Star Image:
Daughter is an English indie folk band originating from London in 2010. Originally the solo work of Elena Tonra, they are now a trio with the addition of guitarist Igor Haefeli and drummer Remi Aguilella.
I took this image from her website. I would say that Daughter is more organic artist. As you can see in her website photo that she is quite 'normal'. She does not try and bring attention to herself too much. As someone like Rhianna uses things like 'sexiness' in her images to bring attention to herself. You can tell that she is the main person in the band as the other two are out of focus and could easily miss them. She is more of a 'real' person, while she is a star she is still reachable and unless you know this genre of music you may not know her.

The Song:

Brief of idea:

  • As the music comes to a build up and fades into the song a birds eye view fade in of the image appears.
  • The room is bland and dull, grey cement walls which have not been painted and same with the floor. There is just a mattress in the middle with some rugged looking sheets placed messily on it.
  • Birds eye view of the bed and we see a girl standing at the end of the bed. In slow motion we see her fall into the mate rouse. The camera zooms in and pans down her body and we see in the hand is a pill pot and a picture of her and someone.
  • She sits up and she cradles herself into into a side ball on the mattress (or sitting up but still cradling) she pulls her hands through her hair and scrapes it back.
  • As she sits up we see the picture falling to the ground, this is shot in slow motion as we see it fall and twirl into the air.
  • It fades into the picture and the time it was taken. We see the couple together happy, possibly even some evens of them taking drugs or possibly 'monging out'. This is all done in a very spaced out pace to match the mood of the song and what the song is about.
  • Goes through the story
  • We see the couple begin to get violent and he hits her. As she falls it time lapses into her falling onto the bed back in the room with the mattress.
  • It fades out in the same way in which it fades in. Maybe starting from her face or maybe her hand the camera zooms out back into a birds eye shot of her on the bed. The screen fades to a black as the music does.
